The Bespoke Design Process

The Bespoke Design Process

Commissioning a piece is less mysterious than it sounds. Here is what happens at each stage, what it costs, and how long it takes.

People often assume a bespoke piece costs several times what a comparable ready-made one would. In practice the difference is usually small, because the money goes into the piece rather than into holding stock. What it does take is time.

Consultation

The first meeting is a conversation, not a sales appointment. We talk about what the piece is for, what you already wear, how it needs to live day to day, and what you want to spend. Bring photographs of anything you like, including pieces you dislike — knowing what to avoid is just as useful.

Design and approval

From that conversation come sketches and then a detailed rendering, so you can see proportion and scale before anything is made. Changes at this stage are free and expected. Nothing goes to the bench until you have approved the design and a quoted price.

Making

Stones are selected specifically for your piece, the metal is worked, the stones are set, and the whole thing is finished by hand. Most commissions take four to six weeks from approval; complex pieces take longer, and we will tell you which yours is at the outset.

  • Allow eight weeks for anything with a deadline attached.
  • A deposit is taken at design approval, with the balance on collection.
  • Final fitting and adjustment are included.
  • You keep the design; it is not reproduced for anyone else.

The first consultation costs nothing and carries no obligation. Most people arrive with a vague idea and leave with a clear one, which is exactly the point of it.

Have a question about your next piece? We're always happy to talk it through.
