The ring you will wear longest deserves more thought than it usually gets. Profile, width and fit matter more than any detail on the surface.
A wedding band is the piece of jewellery most people wear for the longest, usually without ever taking it off. That makes comfort and durability the real decisions, and the styling something that follows from them.
Profile and width
Profile describes the cross-section of the band. A court profile is rounded inside and out and is the most comfortable for continuous wear. A flat band reads as more contemporary but sits harder against the finger. Width is largely proportion: narrower bands suit slimmer fingers and sit better beside a delicate engagement ring.
Sitting against an engagement ring
Two rings worn together will rub, and the softer one loses. Matching the metals avoids uneven wear. Where an engagement ring has a low setting, a shaped or contoured band that follows its outline will sit flush instead of leaving a visible gap.
Practical points
- Try bands on late in the day, when fingers are at their largest.
- A wider band feels tighter than a narrow one of the same size.
- Ask whether the design can be resized later — full eternity bands often cannot.
- Order well ahead; bespoke bands take weeks, not days.
Come in together if you can. Bands are quick to try, and half an hour of comparing profiles usually settles the question far faster than photographs.
